As I pondered the use of craft elements in a mystery novel, I decided to focus on four elements: character, plot, dialogue, and conflict.

Let's start with character:

One of the most important elements of fiction writing, the characters are the people in the novel or story. They are what make the story happen and help us see ourselves in the story. I will create good characters to draw in the reader.

Example:

“Sister Julie’s presence is good and different. HVA ditched religion back in the 60s when they ditched the uniforms, but a longstanding agreement with the archdiocese brought Sister Julie to us from Boston. I’m sure she welcomes the break from the bitter Boston weather. I swear it’s always cold up there (Coop 2025)."

Next up is the plot:

The plot is one way to draw in a potential reader. It is the series of events that unfold throughout the book or story. My plot is a murder mystery at a podcasting conference.

Example:

“I must be careful. Hunt Valley Academy doesn’t need another death on its hands, and I am not ready to die at the hands of a luxury car (Coop 2025).”

Now, let's look at dialogue:

Dialogue helps bring characters to life and advance the plot through their own words. I can use it as another level of characterization.

Example:

“'Tell me, Kim, what brings you in today? I don’t have you as a student until next semester.’

‘I need to talk to someone like you (Coop 2025).’”

And, finally, conflict:

Conflict is an essential storytelling element. It gives the reader a side to choose and someone or something to cheer for or against. It also provides the protagonist with an enemy. I need to ensure I have the appropriate amount of conflicts to carry the story until the end.

Example:

“'I don’t think Lauren Parker’s death was an accident. I think she was murdered (Coop 2025).’”

By correctly utilizing these craft elements in my mystery novel, I can craft a better novel that will be entertaining and engaging.
